TO WEAR OR NOT TO WEAR? THE GREAT FUR DEBATE
Both of us would like to say that we adore all animals. Both of us have dogs and frequent the zoo especially when a little animal is born. But we both eat meat and wear fur with minimal moral hindrance. Is this wrong? And do the types of furs we wear exclude us from the slaughter of endangered species?
We have rabbit and fox fur jackets, vests, scarves not to mention python clutches and bags but i can safely say that you would not see us 'babeing' around in a snow tiger or polar bear any time soon. It is these types of furs that even make us sick!
This brings me to another question, is it better to buy vintage fur than to buy it new? Does it make a difference? Well, yes. we think it does. For us we only really buy vintage fur items maybe because in some capacity we believe that it is more humane and less wasteful of animal lives to purchase already worn garments as opposed to creating more of a demand.
And what about faux? Chanel's recent show featured real icebergs form sweden and a lot of fur but it was all fake. "Fake is not chic-but faux fur is" Karl Largerfeld said backstage at the show. It is interesting to see a respected fashion house advocate the wearing of faux it sends a good message and one more sustainable for the future.
However we dont really know what to say to Karl, because he had no problem using real fur in his Fendi Fall 2010 collection. They were superdeluxe lynx fur - but if this is anything the fur was just panneled on to the coates. Still chic we guess the Italian house just couldnt say no!
When we all really think about what we wear on a day to day basis, unless we are vegans, we will find that our shoes, bags and wallets are usually leather. So what makes fur different? And if you resent fur wearers maybe you should take off your over the knee calf leather boots before you criticize.
