MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA '20' THE EXHIBITION...
It's safe to say that most designers have been and are inspired by Martin Margiela. So it was fascinating to see the retrospect '20' exhibition from the Maison from the last 20 years (not in chronological order)at Somerset House, in London. You could almost trace which designers had taken what and got some sort of inspiration from Margiela. Kit Willow's layering sprung to mind almost immediately. As did LifeWithBird's faux human hair pieces.
There were 30 sections in the exhibition with white confetti adjoining each part. White and every shade of white was a common characteristic through the exhibition, as white is used in its interiors of its offices, showrooms and shops. Margiela's iconic 'Tabi' shoe footprints in white (of course) directed you to the exhibition through Somerset House. Our favorite parts of the exhibition were - the Tabi section; Artisanal Collection (where light boxes on timers lit up different pieces from various seasons); The Birthday Room and Personal Wardrobe video rooms; and 'A Doll's Wardrobe' and XXXL.
The exhibition was first shown in Antwerp (where Margiela is from and studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts) and then in Munich before now in London.
We love Margiela and are pleased to have a some pieces from the Maison (eg. boots and leather pants) but now we wish we had lots more from the last 20 years after seeing the '20' The Exhibition...
Some MMM Fall 2010 RTW... without Martin...We still like...
