Yesterday was my first day roaming around the city and of course I just happened to stumble across one of the coolest vintage stores I have seen in a long time. For those of you in the know Rome is an amazing locale for vintage finds. The store, Vertigo, and its part owner Angelica are both eclectic hoarders of all things timeless. With an emphasis on the 70s glam and 40s embellishment the store literally sparkles when you walk in. A whole room full of shoes, that maybe only Italians can pull off, an armoire to the brim with designer bags and a chandelier dripping in pill boxes and and other styles of head dressings. Angelica is also one of the nicest shop owners met on our expeditions so enthusiastic about all of the treasures she has found and so willing to jump right into a broken english conversation about a YSL scarf she just adores.
Rome is probably one of our absolute favorite cities in Europe not too far behind Copenhagen, Berlin and Paris. At any turn you can come face to face with a great boutique, incredible restaurant or street party. Walking from Vertigo we wound up at the Spanish steps eating lunch at Roman institution since 1934, Nino, the best fettucine funghi in the land, and then wandered through the designer laid streets to our next stop. Fleur is a concept store/restaurant with an Italian edge, meaning incredible merchandising in a ridiculously small space. Take their wall of ballet flats in 50 colours stacked by hue. Then onto FABRIANO Boutique, a gorgeous paper store, a type of Italian Sanrio, we went a little crazy in there.
Heels in this city, like New York, are a no-no, the cobble stones literally eat your shoes. But what is acceptable and almost universally worn is the good ol' espadrille, apparently the only good thing out of Spain according to the Italian shoe sales girl. The rope soled canvas toed wedges that get all stylish women in the city from A to B are sold at Fabrizio Bulckaen, so we stopped in to get ourselves a pair in Taupe.
By 6pm with a foot cramp and a few too many purchases it was time for an aperitivo at Caffe della Bace....Campari rocks.
